City of Barrie deploys DragonWave for Municipal Network: AirPair solution provides the City of Barrie with a 200 Mbps self-healing mesh backbone around the City.
Ottawa, Canada, October 17, 2005,
DragonWave Inc a leading global supplier of next-generation wireless networks, today announced that the City of Barrie, Ontario, has deployed DragonWave’s AirPair wireless Ethernet products into a municipal deployment allowing them to maintain operating costs at an acceptable level while accommodating infrastructure growth.
The City of Barrie was experiencing an escalating demand for bandwidth intensive applications at a number of their primary locations. This demand was further amplified by the fact that the city planned to converge video, voice and data applications onto a single network. A high capacity native Ethernet wireless mesh backbone was selected as the core building block of this project.
“The Return on Investment (ROI) for wireless technology was attractive and the ease of expanding our network reach was enhanced by using DragonWave”, said Lawrence Bacik, Director of Information & Communications Technology for the City of Barrie. “The number of facilities and bandwidth requirements has grown since the case was first put forward, but our ROI has not changed. The expectations are that as we add new locations, we will maintain our current operating cost, while providing an enhanced service.”
The AirPair solution provides the City of Barrie with a 200 Mbps full duplex self-healing mesh backbone for the City. By using a self healing mesh configuration, the City now has redundant connectivity ensuring 99.999% service availability. At each node point-to-multipoint technology will be installed to connect low capacity city locations to the network. These nodes will also provide access points for the city-wide wireless umbrella for future mobile and remote access projects. The physical expansion of their network permits the move from a “rental model” to a “City owned model”
Previously all wireless services were centered on City Hall. In the event of a disaster all service would be brought down. By deploying a self healing wireless mesh, the network can route around any disabled site without impacting communications to other City facilities. This is a very important aspect of the Disaster Recovery plan for the City.
"The advantages of a single IP network combined with the advantages of wireless mesh backhaul meet exactly the requirements for the municipal networks" said Peter Allen, President and CEO of DragonWave. "The City of Barrie have built a leading edge capability carrying voice, video and data services"
DragonWave's AirPair product operates within both licensed and unlicensed radio frequencies of 18-to-26-GHz range, ensuring interference-free performance for customers' traffic. The DragonWave solution provides scalable, ultra-low latency, wire-speed native Ethernet connectivity up to 200 Mbps full duplex. The system is extremely easy to deploy and manage, with a full suite of network management options. AirPair has indoor and outdoor deployment options, and is a highly reliable platform enabling 99.999 service availability.
